Along the Escarpment of the Great African Rift Valley
Spanning central Ethiopia, the Great African Rift Valley landscape is rife with deep canyons and spectacular escarpments.
The Ankober Highlands are one of these places where you wander along shepherds' trails close to the sky along a steep escarpment with amazing views into the lowlands of the Afar Triangle almost 2,000 meters below your feet. Stop for a bite in some villages or for a glass of kosso araki - the local liquor - and spend a beautiful overnight in an old palace.
Accompanied by one of our experienced SimienEcoTours driver guides (English available) you depart for a two days trip to the town of Ankober which lies high above the Great African Rift Valley. The perfect short escape for a minimum of two days with overnights in the Ankober Palace Lodge, a beautifully built replica of the old Menelik II. palace.
The escarpment offers not only great views but also walking and hiking opportunities on several trails. Our car is available anytime to bring you to the trailheads and can also pick you somewhere else.
Trips can be easily extended at Ankober Palace Lodge or you go on a longer loop to Awash National Park.
