Visa & Customs

Visa

Visa and other entry requirements can and do change from time to time. Our 'Before You Travel Guide' includes links to resources where you can check exact requirements. In general, it is not a problem to enter Ethiopia for visitors from most EU member states, UK or US.

Visa at arrival at the airport in Addis Ababa is not possible anymore, visa from the Ethiopian Embassy of your home country is possible only for certain citizenships.

Visitors from most countries of the world should apply easily for an E-Visa under: https://www.evisa.gov.et/#/home. The E-Visa fee is 82 USD since February 2023, and you need a passport valid for at least 6 months after departure.

Customs

Due to strict customs regulations, it may cause problems at the airport to carry more than the usual basic electronic devices, especially if they are new. Import tax payment may be required. Exporting souvenirs imitating historic artifacts have to be approved not original by the National Museum in Addis Ababa. If not, they can be confiscated at the airport before leaving Ethiopia. Keep your receipts.

Photo & video equipment

Professional or high-standard video & photo equipment is difficult to be brought into Ethiopia. An official permission letter can be expensive and needs the support of a travel agency to organize it for you.
