Visa & Customs

Visa

Visa and other entry requirements can and do change from time to time. In general, it is not a problem to enter Ethiopia for visitors from most EU member states, UK or US.

Visa at arrival at the airport in Addis Ababa is again possible since early 2024. The E-Visa fee is 62 USD since August 2024, and you need a passport valid for at least 6 months after departure. Visa from the Ethiopian Embassy of your home country is possible only for certain citizenships. Visitors from most countries of the world can apply for an E-Visa under: https://www.evisa.gov.et/#/home.

Customs

Due to strict customs regulations, it may cause problems at the airport to carry more than the usual basic electronic devices, especially if they are new. Import tax payment may be required. Exporting souvenirs imitating historic artifacts have to be approved not original by the National Museum in Addis Ababa. If not, they can be confiscated at the airport before leaving Ethiopia. Keep your receipts.

Photo & video equipment

Professional or high-standard video & photo equipment is difficult to be brought into Ethiopia. An official permission letter can be expensive and needs the support of a travel agency to organize it for you. Drones are not allowed to be imported, same applies for binoculars, unless you have a special permission. If you require this please get in touch some weeks before your arrival, so that we can help you with this.
